Canaries

Canaries are small finches originating from the Canary islands.

These are small brightly colored birds, usually noted for their beautiful singing voices.

Male canaries are more likely to sing than females, making them the more popular choice as pets.

Canaries need a good size cage so that they can fly around for exercise.

Keep the cage in a well lighted but not drafty location.

Covering  your canary at night will make him feel safe and comfortable.

Fresh clean food and water must be provided daily, and greens should be fed in very small amounts for best nutrition and health..

Grit should be provided in a special cup or sprinkled over the bottom of the cage floor.

Provide a cuttlebone, for the needed calcium it provides.

The lime in the cuttlebone also aids in digestion.

Provide your canary with a bird bath at least once a week, by placing a small bowl of tepid water on the bottom of the cage.

Canaries are very hardy birds and almost all illnesses can be traced to improper diet, dirty cages, or drafts. A balanced diet and plenty of exercise will prevent most canary illnesses.

Taming or training a canary requires patience and persistence

Some canaries can learn to mimic musical notes, and this is a fun way to interact with your bird.

Canaries make delightful little pets.
